Youth for Planetary Health: Students Take Action for a Healthier Future

A new student-led organization is bringing environmental awareness and public health advocacy to the forefront at the local high school. Youth for Planetary Health, founded by passionate students, focuses on educating peers about how environmental issues and climate change directly impact human health.

Planetary health is an emerging field that examines the relationship between the health of the planet and the health of people. From air quality and water safety to food systems and extreme weather, the condition of the environment has a profound influence on public health worldwide. Members of Youth for Planetary Health aim to make these connections clear and inspire action within their school community.

The club is led by a dedicated team of officers: President Vildan Soguktas, Vice President Brianna Quinn, and Social Media Coordinator Aniya Douglas. Together, they are organizing educational events, discussions, and outreach efforts to help students better understand environmental challenges and the role they can play in addressing them.

Club meetings will feature a variety of engaging activities designed to spark conversation and learning. Members may watch short educational videos on different aspects of planetary health and discuss their implications, or participate in group readings where students analyze chapters from books related to environmental science and public health. The organization also plans to host webinars and virtual events featuring experts and advocates in the field.

Youth for Planetary Health is already planning several initiatives to expand its reach. The club will introduce itself to incoming students by hosting a table at Rising Freshman Night and hopes to share announcements explaining why planetary health matters. Their social media platforms will feature educational reels, infographics, mini podcasts, and student street interviews that highlight environmental topics in an accessible way.

Beyond awareness, the group hopes to make a tangible impact. One major Earth Day project under consideration is a “Sustainable Swap,” where students can bring gently used items such as clothing, books, school supplies, jewelry, and accessories and exchange them with others. The event encourages reuse while reducing waste.

Additional ideas include planting native pollinator-friendly plants on campus, partnering with elementary schools to teach younger students about environmental health, and raising funds for a compost bin in the cafeteria to reduce food waste. Youth for Planetary Health also hopes to support students interested in environmental careers by sharing opportunities for climate conferences, professional mentorship, internships, and volunteer work.

The organization plans to keep the community informed through a monthly newsletter, a club website, and school fliers, while also collaborating with other student groups such as the Horticulture Club, Science Club, Human Rights Club, FCCLA, and the school newspaper. With education, collaboration, and action at its core, Youth for Planetary Health is working to empower the next generation to protect both the planet and the people who depend on it.
